Also known as King or King of Tompkins County, a large, uniform, mostly red apple with yellow striping and crisp yellowish flesh of rich, aromatic flavour. Excellent both as a dessert apple and for cooking, best left to colour up fully on the tree, though it does not store as long as many heirlooms. In cider it contributes aroma and moderate acid rather than tannin. Absent from the WSU database, so no PNW trial data exists for it.
Disease: Resistant to apple scab; susceptible to fireblight, perennial canker, cedar-apple rust and collar rot. Makes poor root growth, so it should be grafted onto a vigorous rootstock. Triploid and pollen-sterile - needs two diploid pollinators and will not pollinate others.
