Properly MM.111 (Malling-Merton), the most vigorous of the widely used semi-dwarfing stocks, giving a large free-standing tree at roughly two-thirds to full seedling size. It is the traditional choice for unsupported standard-style cider orchards, wide spacing, and difficult, droughty or heavy soils, at the cost of slow bearing — expect a longer wait to first meaningful crop than with any Geneva stock. Pairing it with an already-vigorous scion such as Amere de Berthcourt or Lambrook Pippin will produce a very large tree that is expensive to harvest by hand. Discrepancies: Genuine and unresolved size disagreement between authorities. WSU says about two-thirds of a standard tree (up to three-quarters on good soils); extension.org and Maryland Extension say 75-85% of standard or 85-100% of seedling; Cornell simply calls trees on MM.111 semistandard to standard. Recommended reporting the range 65-85% of seedling with the soil/scion caveat rather than a single number, because the spread reflects real environmental sensitivity rather than one source being wrong — and because a well-drained Olympic Peninsula site with vigorous cider scions sits at the large end of that range. Also a naming caution worth recording: the orchard's label M.111 does not exist as a Malling stock; MM.111 is a Malling-Merton selection, and EMLA 111 is its virus-cleaned clone. Assume MM.111/EMLA 111 is meant. Disease and anchorage traits agree across every source.

Disease: Resistant to woolly apple aphid and collar rot, and tolerant of fireblight and crown/root rots. Drought tolerant and, unusually, a good choice for heavy or poorly drained soils — the opposite of EMLA 106 in that respect.
